I receive many queries regarding my web site, and many of the questions are repeated. The purpose of this page is to answer those questions and provide some information for beginners new to the Internet or Family History. Please read these pages before sending an email. 1. Why don't you provide a single index listing all the names / surnames which can be found on your site? A search facility is available for all the pages within the Glosgen site. To access the search page click HERE. To find out how to search the individual pages see the answer to question 2. 2. How do I search a page for a particular name or surname within a single page? Internet browsers provide a "FIND" facility. This can be accessed in one of two ways: First select the page/document you want to search.
2.2. A Find box will appear. Type in the name you wish to search for and click on the "find next" button. Note. Do not enter the name in capitals. It is best to enter the name in lower case throughout. It searches for the exact word, so if there are several possibilities search using each spelling. 2.3. Each time it finds the name it will highlight it in blue on the page. 2.4. Repeat the search by clicking again on the "find next" button. 2.5. If no entry is found, or all the entries have been shown, a "search string not found" (Navigator), or "Finished Searching the Document" box will appear. 2.6. Note that it only searches the document currently on the screen. To search all the documents on my site you will have to look at each one separately, but see question 1 above. 3. Can you do some research for me? 3.1 The short answer is no. Sorry. I receive many emails each week, and many of them request my assistance. Unfortunately I have only a limited amount of time, and I spend this on my own research and also preparing additional information to add to the site. 3.2 My suggestions, when asked how or where to obtain additional Gloucestershire Family History information from the Internet are:
3.3 Links to the above, and many other sources, can be found on this website under Gloucestershire Links 4. Have you any information on ...................? See answers to question 3. and question 9 5. Pages take too long to load. Difficult one this. I also get annoyed when pages take forever to load, and because of this I have deliberately kept images to a minimum and tried to control the size of each page. It is however a balancing act - the King's Stanley Marriages register for example has been split into four sections in order to reduce loading time, but it means having to download four separate files when tracing a particular family. In addition the download time is dependent upon web usage - at times of high demand, weekend evenings for example, everything slows. I'm thinking of reducing the file size further to speed up download times but this will add to the number of files. What do you think? 6. Pages don't look right, font size too large/small, page too wide for screen etc. Another difficult one, because I have no control over the setup of your machine. The following may help:
7. Why don't you respond to my email? I receive a large number of emails regarding my website. Most of the emails request more information regarding specific names or villages. I'm unable to provide this due to lack of time and because of lack of specific detailed knowledge. Just replying to these requests for assistance now takes up several hours per week, and the result is that my posting of new documentation onto the website, and my own research, is suffering. I must therefore regretfully say that in future these requests for general information will not receive any response. Please understand my reasons for this. This DOES NOT apply if you are requesting or providing information on any member of the FLIGHT family, or if you have information to provide on any aspect of Gloucestershire family history - in these circumstances you will always receive a response. . If, having read this note you wish to
contact me regarding the FLIGHT family, or to provide information on Gloucestershire,
please do so. One of the reasons for starting this website was to make contact with other
FLIGHT researchers, to provide and obtain information, after all that's the only payment I
receive To contact me use the enquiry form at Once again, my apologies for having to do this. 8. Why don't some of the links work? The internal links, those between each of my own pages are checked before uploading to the server. I have no control over the external links, and with the recent proliferation of "free" web connections in the UK the situation changes weekly. Either way, mistakes do happen. If you find a broken link please let me know. Just send a note of the page you were on, and the address of the link you were trying to reach. It would help everyone, and I might be able to remake the link. 9. Can you verify that the entry is correct? The simple, and only answer, is no. The information I have is already on the site. Every care has been taken with the information on these pages, but in the main they are transcripts of transcripts and errors can occur at every stage. It is therefore strongly recommended that each entry is checked against original records. In addition, the handwriting for the original entry could be illegible, or the name spelt incorrectly. If you want to carry out rudimentary checks online see the answer to 3.2 above Site News. The Home Page address can be accessed using: Please add this to Favorites or Bookmarks in your Browser and remember to check regularly for new additions to the site. |
